Hi everyone

there is an uninsulated tank with a fixed roof. it is 2.1m in diameter and 4m high. the tank is made out of 6mm carbon steel plates. it is 3/4 full of water at 4 degree Celsius. outside temperature is -18 degree Celsius. Wind velocity is 5m/s.

i want to calculate the heat loss from the tank. assuming tank's wall temperature is at -18 degree Celsius, i can calculate heat loss from the wet surface of the tank using heat conduction equation. how can i calculate heat loss through the surface of water and bottom of the tank?

Hello,

You may have a look at this great article and find your answer:
"Predict storage-tank heat transfer precisely" by J. D. Kumana and Samir P. Kothari

According to my calculations, the maximum total heat loss of the liquid phase is approx. 3 kW.

Regards,
Lucian

Kamyarmvn:

Breizh is giving you some valuable information regarding member Enrico Lammers' great work and coordination with our Forum in regards to the practical application of Kumana and Kothari's excellent article on the subject.

The resulting product developed as a result of a specific thread in our Forums can be found in our Forums as a downloadable spreadsheet, developed and refined by Enrico, a great practical and intelligent engineer.

This is a proud example of the many accomplishments and contributions our Forums have done in the past for all our readers and members.

As Breizh states, all you have to do is use our Search Engine and you will find a lot of answers to your problems.  Before applying the developed spreadsheet, I highly recommend you read the related thread.
