Gentlemen,

We have a 40 KM 6" un-insulated CS liquid full pipeline that contains butene.

Currently our butane consumption rate is 4 m3/hr ( Unit turn down) during this consumption we see a steady rise in line pressure during day time and our Psv's are pooping up. We believe it is due to thermal expansion as the pump discharge pressure is 20 barg and the pressure downstream of pump NRV have experienced 30 barg.

It seems thermal expansion is much more than our continuous consumption rate.

I would like to know do any body of you have faced this type of situation? if so what measures you have taken to prevent PSV opening up.

Your suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

Hi,

What is the design pressure of the pipeline at the downstream of the pump?.If the design pressure is more than sufficient to take care of thermal expansion pressure say 30 barg then you have to adjust the PSV setpoint.otherwise the pipeline should be insulated or shall be painted with insulation paint. But anyway insulation is just to delay the blocked expansion rate.PSV will definitely pops but in this case delayed pop.
