All,

I have a packed column that separates water from ethylene glycol (EG). I have noticed a drastic reduction of the column efficiency due to channeling more on one site. last week we had a scheduled shutdown,  i realized looking into the tower that a quick fix could be to install re-distribution rings throughout the tower to collect fluid from the wall and try to put it back in the center. Since i am not an expert, i wanted to know the criteria. For example: how many rings per column height? how many pipes/tubes per diameter etc...

If you have done such work and have some references please share with me. attached is a sketch of my design

Thank you,

Hi Pingue,

Could you mention the height of your packed column ?

If your bed is longer than 10 ft, you require a second bed with an additional redistributor in between, in order to avoid fluid channeling and collection.

Redistribution rings can be used, but check out redistribution criteria given in Kister's distillation design, or get supplier info on empirical data.

They are pretty useful.

Regards,

Shantanu

Thank you guys.

I did a high pressure wash of the distribution plate. the holes on the tubes got cleared and I also increase the overall height of the distribution outer shell.

I called the manufacturer and they were asking for too much information (simulations etc...) i did not have time for all that this shutdown. my shutdown was going to last only 15 days. Since start-up couple of days ago the column is performing extremely well (I hope it stays that way :) ).

Thank you for your inputs.

Hi Pingue 2008 ,

Turn around or shut down periods are "golden mines" to resolve problem on harware . With a good PM program in place  you should be able to fix similar issues.

Good luck .
