Hello everyone,

I would like to share a malfunction in our air centrifugal compressor. The compressor driven by a steam turbine has five stages. Recently we found that pressure at outlet of third stage has increased 1.6 bar, from 8.2 to 9.8 barg, and the opening of IGV at inlet of first stage has increased from 55% to 90%. The other operating parameter of the compressor is normal.

Well, I wonder if someone can answer my queries regarding the above malfunction: Have you ever encountered that problem? What might be the reason for it?

Thanks and best regards,

Trung Phu

Can you furnish some more data, such as

1) Any change in steam consumption in steam turbine

2) Temperature & Pressure at each stage outlet (New as well as old)

3) Change in any utility condition / flow (such as cooling water)

4) Conditions at surface condenser

I think, forum can help you if you provide all such data.

What do you mean by "Opening of IGV at inlet of the first stage of compressor"?

In addition to the information that Cea requested, please let us have the P&ID of the compressor package

and the performance curve of the compressor if available.

Hi Trung Phu ,

Did you contact the vendor ? Certainly not the 1rst time they encounter such issue .

May be time for inspection and overhaul ?

The attached is a drawing of air compressor with its parameter. This is for your reference. Pressure at outlet of third stage has increased 1.6 bar, from 8.2 to 9.8 barg.

trungphu,

Contacting the compressor manufacturer would be the best option for troubleshooting. Meanwhile, your maintenance team can attempt  some troubleshooting based on some generic troubleshooting guidelines as given in:

Trung,

You need to compare the operating data with the design data, in a tabular form. The DCS screen shot doesn't lend itself to good analysis without a lot of work. You should do that work, not us.

Trungphu

As my friends told you, please check all process data and trends first . You should check the pressure trends and find when this pressure increase at the 3rd stage has happened and then check other operating conditions and process data such as discharge valves opening, intercoolers, etc.

If there is no sensible change through them, it may be a mechanical trouble within the 3rd stage and need to contact vendor..
