Hi all,

I am working on sizing of a  3-phase production separator. The incoming fluid is Gas/HC Condensate/ Water. Following are the details;

Flow rate (Gas/Condensate/Water)= 10 MMSCFD/800 BPD/800 BPD

Operating Pressure (Min./Max.) = 250 psig/1000 psig

Operating Temperature (Min./Max.)= 70 deg. F/ 120 deg. F

HC Condensate specific gravity@ 60 deg. F = 0.76

Water specific gravity@ 60 deg. F = 1.03

Gas density = 2.693 lb/ft3

i need to know the requirement of plate pack in this separator. As per shell DEP, three-phase settlers with plate packs are recommended for efficient separation of primary L/L dispersion and a relatively small gas flow rate.

Can somebody advise me the thumb rule or benchmark for application of plate packs.

What does 'relatively small flow rate' means actually?

Any criteria for the specific gravity of two liquids?

I will appreciate any help.

Is this a real project? If so, you should contact plate-pack vendors for advice. But for this light condensate I don't believe that you need a plate-pack. And your range of operating pressure is absurd. Any vendor will need the viscosity of the three phases. If you really want to operate at low pressure, you must specify the fluids at that pressure, too. For production separators there are usually two design points. One for initial production and one for some later years where the pressure may be lower, the gas rate less, and a greater water cut. Sounds to me like this is an academic exercise.

Thank you for your valuable comments Mr. Bobby.

It is a real industrial project and I am working on it.

This is the operating pressure range provided in client's datasheet.

Viscosity can be provided at low pressures as well since I have the inlet feed composition. Simulation software can be used to establish properties at low pressures.

And yes you are right that after pressure depletion, gas flow will be lowered along with high water cuts. I am provided with a range of Gas flow rate i.e. 2-10 MMSCFD and water flow rate as Normal-Design = 500-800 BPD.

is the HC condensate density and viscosity the only criteria?since you mentioned that you don't believe there is any need for plate packs application for such light condensate.

Are there any other considerations to decide their requirement?

It appears that you and your company don't have any experience designing production separators. What I recommend you do is have someone experienced in the art provide a design based on your duty specification. Ken Arnold does this sort of work. And there are many others. If you don't want to go this route, then I suggest you purchase one of Ken Arnold's books, post haste. You must determine the materials of construction, too. This will be mostly determined by the water characteristics.

Good luck.

Hi gents
I'm working to make adequacy check for an existing two phase separator so,my question,do we have any conditions that I have to check with??
Best Regards

There are some free applications on my website. Just Google my name to find it.

They only exist at the website. Can you tell me your location? Were the applications responsive enough without delays?
