Dear all

We are to install few storage tanks of 1,3 Butadiene , the capacity of individual tank of which is 22 m3. Can anybody tell me what min distance we shall put these tanks away from Process Area? Moreover, in compliance with some references like OIA(oil Insurance Association)  or NIGC standards , this distance depends on whether or not the Butadiene can be considered as LOW hazard or HIGH hazard chemical. In fact, if Butadiene can be deemed a Low hazard chemical, the said distance will be 30 m. But if this chemical is a high hazard one, the said distance will have to be 75 m!!

Now I don’t know exactly if 1,3 Butadiene is Low or High hazard chemical. Any assistance?

Thank you for your respond. If you refer to attached table that I extracted from NIGC standard, there is a marked note that is :

“B. A high hazard process unit has explosion classification under petrochemical schedule of E-4 or E-5.”

I tried to get this classification table from internet , but without any success.

Look for the NFPA hazard ratings. You can find that in the very useful manual breizh supplied. With a health rating of 2, flammability rating of 4, and reactivity rating of 2, butadiene is definitely a high hazard chemical.

As for the safe distance within a plant, you need to look at the risk tolerance criteria specified by your company or by local legislation. As I replied recently in another forum, you'll probably need a QRA study to calculate individual and societal risks, and then you will know if the assumed location/distance is acceptable or not.
