In our plant we have 2 phase in each phase we need two compressor, after the end of phase two,

We have 4 compressor in operation and one back up compressor (4+1), type of those compressor are centrifugal

Vendor said that the backup compressor will connect with manual valve instead of automatic valve to ensure the reliability,

He said that automatic valve will decrease the availability of the plant,

As I know if we consider the automatic valve with failure position it can be more reliable than the manual valve

Please advise me

Cheers

Mike,

Please be informed, regardless of the failure position, an automatic valve can be subject to stuck closed condition when it's required to be in open position. Then generally, in reliability viewpoint, a manual valve which is to be opened by an operator can be more reliable than an automatic valve in the case you has described...
