Dear All,

We have one over sized PSV installed in the plant. PSV protects a Gas knock out drum and the Governing case  for sizing is " Blocked Outlet Case".

Estimated Relief flow is nearly 30% of the PSV rated flow. Also, it has no other scenarios which can lead to more flow.

The reason for having such higher rated flow is PSV was available and hence chosen to avoid buying new PSV.

After searching in Google and CHe Resources, it was clear that the PSV is more prone to " Chattering" due to its over size.

Even though blocked outlet scenario is unlikely to happen on a regular basis, Now let us consider for the sake of my question, PSV chattered and internal damage has occurred after a prolonged period of operation. In such case, is there any way we can know that PSV was damaged, with out removing it (with out plant shut down).

In other words is it possible to inspect the PSV for signs of damage (caused by chattering) when the equipment is in operation ?

Thanks

Srikrishna

Srikrishna,

Considering around minimum 25% of the rated capacity as a limitation for relieving without chattering and the fact that the relieving fluid is in gas state, it's most unlikely to have such destructive occurence in mentioned PSV.

Anyway, the on-line inspection for PSV's is possible which relevant vendor can help knowing the detail of operation...
