Hello Friends

i have to open one topic for discussion as tagged in TOPIC. Ignition source risk assessment of Agitator with gland packing, single mech. seal and double mechanical seal. I am expecting comment from experienced and expert professionals.

Q:In reactor with initial zone 0 (presence of Hexane vapours), we have gland packing in agitator. With provision of initial inertisation, we can reduce internal zone 0 to zone 1. I want to confirm how should i proceed with measures.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Sudip

Some times we do such type of Risk assessment. For gland we consider a probability of failure(leak) < 1 yr, whereas in single mechanical 1-10 yrs & double mech > 10 yrs. So based on this probability you can try checking the severity of the failure (or leak) and arrive to some quantitative numbers. it would help deciding which type of seal you can select.

Dear Rilesh

Thanks for your comment. But how did you concluded with probability of failure rate of packing/gland/seal based on seal selection. Is it based on your experience or You have some reference?

Once again thanks for updates.

Regards

Sudip

Hi ,

As for mechanical seals I would talk to to big names , like Flowserve , Burgmann .

Good luck .
