We purge hydrogen pipings with nitrogen to allow inerting. My question is, is this required? Hydrogen being so light, wouldn't it purge itself if we opened the pipings up to air (which is where our hydrogen vents)? Thanks in advance for your help.

No, it doesn't purge itself. For more information about purging requirements and calculations see CEN/TR 15281 and NFPA 69.

If you looked at the flammability range of hydrogen, you probably would not ask the question. If we should tell you that you need not purge, what then?
