Hi there. I have been tasked to design a cooling tower with the following information.

Temperature of water in = 60degC
Temperature of Water out = 15 degC
Ambient Air temperature = 8 degc
Relative Humidity = 30 percent
To cool 30m^3/min of water

I am finding it hard to get started with this but I am assuming I have to use the Merkel equation. Surely the heat load of the tower isn't as simple Q=cpmdeltat using the water inlet and outlet temperature?

Any help in the correct direction is appreciated. Thanks

Dear pads96:

It would be good to know if you are attempting an actual design of a cooling tower, or a simplified calculation regarding the streams involved,  as taught in first years chemical engineering education.

For the simplified calculation, you usually use an "humidity chart" which let you obtain data regarding the air, like its specific enthalpy, so you can perform an energy balance.

Best regards.
