Hey, I am designing a shell and tube heat exchanger as I mentioned earlier. I have narrowed my choice interms of TEMA down to AES and AET. i my tube side I have a highly fouling fluid and in my shell side I have clean fluid. I am confused as to how tube insides are cleaned in a STHE, since I have a heavily fouling fluid I may require frequent cleaning so need access for mechanical cleaning of inside of my tubes but I dont need access to tube outsides or shell. Is it better for me to choose a AES or AET, i have researched that AES has smaller capital cost but has higher cleaning costs and time. I also understood AET have the highest capital cost and lower thermal efficiency but the lower cleaning costs. Should I chose the AES since I wont need to remove my tube bundle to clean inside it, or should I chose AET, any help is appreciated :)

P.S - i have a likelihood  polymerization inside my tubes but the shell side is clean. Also both are toxic and high pressure.

I am also confused about whether you need to remove the tube bundle to clean inside it or you don't have to? ...

Hi ,

Depending the process used to perform the cleaning ( Chemical or High pressure cleaning) , you will need to remove the heads .

Since you have been talking fouling , polymer ,etc , I believe that High pressure cleaning is the way to clean  with full access to the bundle..

There are several advantages in using hydrocleaning. The cost is less than other methods such as chemical cleaning. It is not damaging like mechanical cleaning can be.
