My workplace (refinery) gets n-butane and isobutane (for alkylation)  from CCR, AVU. It gets olefins from FCC.

We currently do not have enough amount of iso and n-butane for 100% capacity utilization.

My queries are:

1) Will buying butane from outside and having 100% capacity utilization be a good option?

Alkylate is added to Motor spirit. Should I sell less MS or shouls I buy butane?

2) What exactly should I buy? Pure isobutane? a mixture of Iso and n-butane.

3) What companies trade iso and n-butane? How can I get there prices?

I'm surprised that your refinery organization doesn't have an LP to answer these questions.

I think this is a student case...anyway some hints can be given as follows:

- iC4 should be also available from other units of the refinery (eg CDU, ISOM, HCU, VBU)

- answers to 1) should come from an LP model, considering all the constraints together.

- usually iC4 is bought preferentially, if available in the refinery area. Mixed C4 could be an option if there is space in the C4 Splitter...and market for nC4.

- answers to 3) can be only obtained locally, by the refinery organization.

good luck

I agree. LP model study, with good input.
