Hey friends

In our project, we have propane, butane and ethylene atmospheric double wall tanks.
Basic designer has not considered fire case for lp flare stack sizing.
In case of fire psvs will discharge to atmosphere.
Considering that these tanks are located in a crowd petrochemical complex, is it safe to discharge psvs to atm. ?

Regards

Hi Ali,

It's not uncommon using large size emergency vent/rupture disc to release the huge relief load of fire case in the storage tanks containing flammable liquids to the atmosphere rather than conducting to flare system because in one hand the size of required header and stack will be abnormal and on the other hand a thin wall atmospheric tank engulfed in a pool fire unlikely can resist against failure due to over temperature.

Nevertheless there can be some facilities such as deluge system, dike walls and foaming system by which the consequences of the fire on mentioned tanks can highly be mitigated.
