Hi,

I am working on simulating a gas absorption packed column and would like to add an inter-stage cooler between two packed beds, to cool the solvent.

Is there a limit to the amount of solvent that can be sent to the interstage cooler ?  Can I send the entire flow, or is there a practical limitation of the amount that can be cooled.  I am cooling the solvent after a packed bed stage and sending it back to the column just above the distributor.

Thanks

-AC

HI alchemist,

Basically cooling or heating in a continuous process may be required for the steady-state and isothermal operation of the process.  So simulate the whole system and check if there is any stream in the process that has problem with maintaining the specific local temperature.  No further cooling or heating of a stream, either fully of partly, may be required if the process simulation is converged and each stream is stabilized in its temperature.

In your system, however, issues are not yet introduced such as heat of absorption, absorbent, regeneration method of the rich solution, configuration of the system, etc.

Just recycling the rich solution from bottom back to the top of the column may continuously raise the temperature of the solution even due to the friction in the circulation loop and pump impeller. Higher the solution temperature rises the lower the capability of the solution will drop. So the rich solution from the bottom of the absorber shall be regenerated and cooled before recycling back to the absorption column.
