Hi there

I am working in a lube oil blending unit. I would like to know about the availability of a software for finding of viscosity of a mixture of two oils. It means by entering two companents (base oils) viscosity and compsition(%), we should get approximate viscosity of the mixture after blending those oils together according to the compsition given.

Anybody can help me please....

Dear Alikutty,

I do not know whether any software is available for your purpose of blending lub oils, but I can give you some hints on which you can build your own software.

Please refer to Petroleum Refinery Engineering By Nelson, Figure 4-45 and Example 4-10. A method for blending lub oil bases stocks is given. Based on this, you can build your own software for blending lub oils.

Please note that Viscosity Index is not an additive property. If you are blending lub oils, you may have to take into consideration Viscosity Index also.

If you do not get the book or if you need any other clarifications, please write to me at pkrao43@yahoo.com

Dear mr. Rao,

Thank u for ur information about my requirement of details about blending of oils. I wil try to search the details in that book and try to make it. I have got a website page having this calculation form, and i am trying to make a program for that..
we b page is : http://www.rohacell....e_oil_calc.html

thank u...

ASTM D341 desctribes the viscosity temperature relationship of hydrocarbons. This standard also includes nomographs for calculating the viscosity of the misture and also cites the Wright equation.
However, if you want you can contact Shell Marine Fuels, Exxon Mobil Marine Fuels or DNV PS who all produce fuel blend calculation software programs which will apply to any hydrocarbon mixture.
You may also find a sueful calculation that you can download from www.Steamesteem.com.

Alikutty,

Have you got the software for viscosity blending? If not, please send your email. I have made a program in VB and will send it to you.

Hi Alikutty,

I would like to develop a web based blending program for a university project similiar to the web based system you have developed, but i'm not familiar with blending formulas, and hope you could give me some help and advice. I hope you can help and look forward to your thoughts, comments, etc. I would like to thank you in advance for any help, advice and support.

Best Wishes,

Steven

I don't know how accurate you need this viscosity predictions to be, but there is one very good approximation formula given in D. Kern's "Process heat transfer" book:

1/u = w1/u1 + w2/u2, where:

u - viscosity of blend
w1, w2 - weight fractions of blending components
u1, u2 - dynamic viscosities of blending components

This formula yields rather good results for heat transfer calculations. And it is given for completely miscible components (hydrocarbons).

If you need much more precise calculations, I'd suggest you to build your own charts/correlations based on laboratory data.

Best regards,

The Shell Program BUNKERCALC is a free download for calculating the properties of a blend of bunker fuels which includes the calculation of the blend viscosity from the component viscosities and proportions.
The calculation can be downloaded by going first to this pdf file which contains the download link:
