flowrate, particle size distribution on inlet, efficiency required (can be defined in many ways), allowable pressure drop... question is very general, therefore answer is general too

yes, it does
inlet to cyclone is rectangular and "higher > width" to feed cyclone close to the wall to minimise the average distance the particles must travel to be removed from gas stream
