Hello all,

I'm a senior student for Chem E, at the Technion, Israel.
I need to use a vacuum distillation column to separate water, Phthalic Anhydride (PA) and Maleic Anhydride (MA).

technical properties:
(I`m using a side rectifier so i need only one column)
the feed stream is 14e03 Kg/hr
the water stream - from the top of the column is 2540 Kg/hr
the MA - the side stream is 1660 Kg/hr
the PA - from the bottom of the column is 10e03 Kg/hr

we are currently using 18 theoretical trays with 30% efficiency so it will probably be 40 actual trays.
the distillation pressure is 15 KPa so we need to use steam ejector at the top of the column.

my questions:
1.Is it possible to use sieve trays for vacuum distillation? how much do they damage the vacuum?
2.If not, can you give me a good reference to the alternative (the two books you recommended here - Ludwig and Kister do not give me full specification, they just give a quick review. a name of a a few companys that manufacture columns might help as i need a financial estimation too).
3.Is reflux allowed at a vacuum distillation ? (because the suction is very hard, taking the top product back into the column could be consider a waste of money)

we are currently using pump-around and we are looking for new better alternatives (is the option of pump-around is needed at all if we use reflux? is it feasible?
i`m adding the PFD (and the steam ejectors are not installed yet)

thank you very very much
