Hi,
I am a student in a local refinery and I am given a task to do Relief Load Calc for a number of Safety Valves for which the governing contingency is External Fire.
Based on above, I have gone through API 520/521/2000 for respective Relief Load Calcs. But what I am lagging here is how to calculate exposed surface area for; Horizontal vessel, Vertical vessel, Heat Exchanger and Trayed Column. I am very much aware of the fact of considering the 25 feet flame height factor. But unaware of the formulae to calc surface area of dished ellipsoidal / hemispherical / 10% dished (for vertical vessel). When it comes to horizontal vessel – things get a little out of hand. How to calculate the wetted area of a half filled horizontal vessel (is it just the proportion to volume filled to full vessel volume).
I have tried browsing through the forum to find nothing.
If someone has already discussed it then please refer me to that post or let have this thing resolved now.
I am not looking for tools with hidden formulae on the background but formulae that I can justify / put into my excel spreadsheet.

May thanks;
A
