Oil engineer,
It's difficult to believe you don't understand "anything about thermodynamics", although I accept the fact which has been so clearly expressed by my mentor, Norm Lieberman, in one of his books: "Universities are great storehouses of knowledge. Freshmen enter the university knowing a little, and leave knowing nothing. Thus, knowledge remains behind and accumulates."
I would suggest you to obtain a very interesting and user-friendly book "Thermodynamics - An Engineering Approach", published by McGraw-Hill. Just Google the subject, and you'll find a lot of links. The price is about 135$.
