In terms of flooding in a distillation column, there are 2 kinds of flooding, namely jet flooding and liquid flooding.
Jet flooding occurs when vapour velocity through liquid bed/tray becomes sufficient to aerate the liquid to a degree that space between the tray is full. Aerated bed causes increase in pressure drop and impedes flow of liquid into and through the downcomers.
Then what is liquid flooding?
Thank you in advance for all the help that is provided.

Conan,
The downcomer of a tray separates the froth from tray. If the downcomer is small, or the liquid rate is high, it could lead to the liquid in downcomer to "back up" onto the tray. This is commonly referred to as downcomer flood or liquid flood.
hope this clarifies,
abhishek
