Based on Bernoulli's equation, this worksheet will calculate the flow through an orifice valid for gases, vapors, and steam.

Corner tap types are assumed.

Based on the method shown here:

http://www.flowmeter...ifice_calc.html

What's New in Version 1.11 (See full changelog)

  • 1.1 Fixed cell D12 bug
  • 1.11 Equation (19000*D25/D22)^0.08 changed to (19000*D25/D22)^0.8. Little affect on most results.

As instrument engineer I have to calculate the other way around, given flow, given pressure drop, given linesize.

To calculate the orifice diameter.

The ISO 5167 gives formulas for the uncertanty, you may add them.

Excell allows you to built an unit selector. Most locations use bar. many places have flow in m3/hr instead of kg/hr

Density calculator for gas.

Enjoy your Sunday!
Dear Toon

Thank you very much for you suggestion.

I will try to incorporate these changes in this spreadsheet.

By the way, You can use this spreadsheet to calculate orifice diameter using solver.

regards
Dear acer_asd,

There is a bug in your sheet.
Cell D12 must be calculated value (or it has to be highlighted).
Expansion coef. calculation (cell D23) refers to cell D12.

For the Discharge Coefficient, what equation is this based on? From what I can tell this is not the latest ISO 5167 equation. I keep stumbling onto a different equation on the internet - similar form, but constants are slightly different and exponents slightly different. Results simillar?

Also, there is a mistake in your equation: This section (19000*D25/D22)^0.08 should be (19000*D25/D22)^0.8 Or maybe the referenced equation is wrong. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks

Dear johnnygeneric

Thanks your feedback.

Yes, you are right, there is a mistake in this equation. i have submitted corrected file in download section.

Actually this mistake create minor error in calculation that's why it escaped my attention.

Also, this is not ISO 5167 but this is older version i.e. 2003. I dont think there will be much of a difference in this calculation and latest ISO calculation. If you have latest ISO please check it and tell me how much error is there in this equation.

Once again i thank you for your feedback.

For orifice plates used for just taking up pressure drop in a line, what "L" should we use? Corner taps, flange taps or what? Thanks.

Johnnygeneric

Which one can we use for Falnge Taps?

Thanks!
