Celebrities Outside The Engineering And Science Field With Engineering And Science Degrees

Celebrities Outside The Engineering And Science Field With Engineering And Science Degrees For a change this is not a technical entry. It is more so for the sake of general knowledge and fun. There are quite a few celebrities who graduated as engineers but never chose to work in the engineering field. They chose the cinematic arts, music, politics and other diverse fields to excel and make a name for themself. Since this is a chemical engineering forum let us start with a celebrity having a chemical engineering degree:

Dolph Lundgren (Actor):

He is known for his hulking physique as Russian boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV and Gunner Jensen in The Expendables, He graduated from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. In 1982 he then received a master's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Sydney, finishing with the highest results in his class. He was also awarded a Fulbright scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983.

Laura Shields (Model):

Held the crown of Miss UK International in 2004. Worked as a signed model for the famous "Elite Modeling Agency" before calling it quits. Most importantly, she earned a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from Leeds University and is a member of the high-IQ society Mensa.

Frank Capra (Movie Director):

Film director. Born in Sicily in 1897 and immigrated to Los Angeles in 1903. Earned a degree in Chemical Engineering before he went on to work in the film business. Among films directed: "It Happened One Night," "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," and "It's a Wonderful Life." "It Happened One Night" (1934) became the first Hollywood film to win five Oscars.

Alex Lowe (Mountaineer):

One of the world's best climbers. Had a Chemical Engineering scholarship at Montana State University in Bozeman. Spent two years there. He later got a degree in Applied Math. Lowe was killed in an avalanche on Tibet's Shishipagma on October 5, 1999.

Kevin Olmstead (Gameshow Winner):

World-record game show payoff winner, in 2001, with $2,180,000 from "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" After acquiring B.S. and M.S. Chemical Engineering degrees from Case Western Reserve University and MIT, earned a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan.

Donald Sutherland (Actor):

Graduated with an engineering degree from University of Toronto

Rowan Atkinson (Actor - Mr. Bean & Johnny English):

Holds a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from "The Queens" college Oxford.

Jimmy Carter (39th President of the Unites States of America):

39th President of the United States. Attended Georgia Southwestern College and the Georgia Institute of Technology and received a B.S. degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1946. In the Navy he became a submariner, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets and rising to the rank of lieutenant. Chosen by Admiral Hyman Rickover for the nuclear submarine program, he was assigned to Schenectady, N.Y., where he took graduate work at Union College in reactor technology and nuclear physics and served as senior officer of the pre-commissioning crew of the Seawolf.

Masi Oka (Actor / Digital Effects Artist):

Brian May (Musician, Singer, Song Writer):

He is famous as the guitarist for the band "Queen".

May studied physics and mathematics at Imperial College, London, graduating with a BSc (Hons) degree  in physics with Upper Second-Class Honors. He then proceeded to study for a PhD degree, also at the Imperial College departments of Physics and Mathematics, and was part way through this PhD program, studying reflected light from interplanetary dust and the velocity of dust in the plane of the Solar System. When "Queen" became successful he abandoned his physics doctorate but co-wrote two scientific research papers: MgI Emission in the Night-Sky Spectrum (1972) and An Investigation of the Motion of Zodiacal Dust Particles (Part I) (1973), which were based on his observations at the Teide Observatory in Tenerife. He is the co-author of Bang! – The Complete History of the Universe with Sir Patrick Moore and Chris Lintott, which was published in October 2006. In October 2007, more than 30 years after he started his research, he completed his PhD thesis in astrophysics, entitled A Survey of Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud, passed his viva-voce, and performed the required corrections. He officially graduated at the postgraduate awards ceremony held in the Royal Albert Hall, on the afternoon of Wednesday 14 May 2008.

Hedy Lamarr (Actress / Inventor):

Although she had no formal engineering or science (physics / mathematics) degree, this very beautiful actress is credited as a co-inventor of an important invention named as "Frequency-Hopping Spread spectrum". Refer the link below:

Hope all of you have fun reading this entry. These celebrities prove that a good education can prove to be  stepping stone in any field regardless of what you studied in college.

It is nice compilation. Add this personality also.

In India Nitish Kumar, CM of Bihar holds an electrical engineering degree.

Manohar Parrikar is an IIT Bombay graduate in metallurgical engineering.

Ankur,

Please keep going lets make a thesarus of learned celebrities and then also those who have excelled in educationaly demanding feats, without those levels of formal education like many Hindustani progenies in the field of maths ... science ... mathematics who still reverberate throughout the Sciences of the World today picked up and passed westwards via Middle East, Turkey, Greece, etc., and the lost era of Vikram Aditya (of the one single Thailand to Lituania gracing civilzation and dominion ... much much before the 100's of years before the Mongol bands took over the civilizations and we see the residuals of that still today ... when most of the world was small villages and still nomadic (- no pun ... real and literally)

... to inspire those who want to be inspired without being celebrities and who may be feeling disappointed despite high ideals when they took up education or were forced out of education due to circumstances ...

This will inspire a whole NEW generation of people ... I am so humbly and delightedly surprised by Jimmy Carter ... wishing him a LONG ayushia!

Mr. Prithviraj Chavan, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, is graduate of IIT Bombay

I thought what they told in Expendables 2 about Dolph Lundgren was just for the movie.. Good to know he is actually a Chemical Engineer!!

I suppose you can see more celebrities graduated in an engineering field in third word countries as engineering is, or at least was, more preferable.
