Member Status And Reputation

When browsing around our community, you may have noticed that some members are decorated with "ChE Jedi" or "Excellent" reputations. I thought I'd take some time to explain these ratings and ask for suggestions for changes. Drop your suggestions in the comments below.

Member Status
Member status is our measure of the number of posts or topics made by each community member. I'll choose one of our esteemed community members Zauberberg to use as an example. In the image above, you can see from his abbreviated profile view shown in the forums that his Member Status is "ChE Jedi". But, what does this mean?

Our Member Status rankings are currently set as follows:
0-9 posts = Newbie
10-30 posts = Member
31-50 posts = Veteran Member
>50 posts = ChE Jedi

We can set these to any values that you'd like and I chose these long ago during the process of setting up the community section. I'm thinking that maybe it's time for some feedback from the community. We can set as many levels as we'd like and call them whatever we wish. For example, we could have:

0-20 posts = New to Community
21-40 posts = Associate Community Member
41-60 posts = Community Member
61-150 posts = Senior Community Member
>150 posts = Hallmark Community Member

Again, I'm just making them up. We could use whatever theme you'd like.

Reputation
The reputation system is different. This is a peer-review system where other community members can assign pluses or minuses to community contributions.

Attached Image

For example, if someone gave a terrific answer to a question in the forums, you can click the "Plus" button to improve their reputation by one point. Alternatively, if someone posts a question with little or no detail, that may be grounds for a "Minus" to their reputation.

Currently, our reputation levels are set as:
< -20 = Bad
-10 to -19 = Poor
-9 to +9 = Neutral
+10 to +19 = Good
>20 = Excellent

Just a side note: Our administrators and moderators have their reputation set to 20 by default and are not eligible to receive repuation points

Again, if you think adjustments should be made to this scale, give me your comments below.

Remember, you can always go to your Profile and click on the "Reputation" tab to see who has given you reputation points and for which posts. The idea is to reinforce quality postings and encourage improvement for postings that need a little work.

I look forward to hearing your feedback.

I think more member levels would be good, especially since we anticipate more people joining with different posting rates/quality. I'd suggest the following ranking system:

0-100 = Newbie
101-500 = ChE Apprentice
501-1000 = ChE Jedi
1001-2000 = ChE Guru
2001-5000 = ChE Professor
>5000 = *personal tags*

I know the tags sound funny but I just wanted to suggest the no of posts one must achieve before gaining a new rank. As for the *personal tags*, is it possible for the admin to grant custom names to members with more than 5000 posts? If someone hits 5001, he/she can have his/her own ChE tag, which can help members (especially new ones) identify with this individual who has (obviously) contributed a lot to the community.

As for the reputation system, I think it's fine the way it is, perhaps on other forums, it would easily evolve into a popularity contect tool but I doubt it'll happen here. Although I think it'll be good to encourage members to use the system to encourage others to improve their post quality & of course to deter "bad" posts.

How about getting rid of the negative reputation; it goes against the spirt of a helping community. Having a "zero" reputation makes me feel bad enough. As you are aware, community members have no problem asking us to explain if the questions need clarification.
Do we really need any of these features? Why would anyone be classified based on the number of his/her posts, or by the level of useful advices he/she provides? Does it really matter? It seems like someone can get himself affected too much by this concept.

What I would like personally, is to get rid of the spammers, hackers, and all these bored people hanging out there and trying to get some attention. We don't even need to ban them forever - just open another section or website where everyone can post graffiti and his personal thoughts. It may even expand our ChE world a bit.

Keep the feedback coming. If we want to get rid of reputation, it's simple. I think it's a good way to let users know how others have felt about the responses that a member has given in the past. I've seen only a single abuse of this feature since it was implemented quite a while back and it certainly get used frequently.

Don't get too caught up in our "classifications", they're really only meant to indicate our active someone is in our community. I think everyone here values any and all input that they receive.

Interesting comments....I hope to receive more.

I think these features are meant to be fun, it's also a quick way for newbies to identify other members, especially the long-timers ;)

I support having a social section for our members, we can talk about non-technical stuff, discuss world issues, debate about what's going on in the world...we will need strict moderation to prevent spam & create a comfortable place for us to mingle in the open.

Dear All Hello/Good Evening,

Sorry to be absent for sometime and late to join this very "Blog" initiated by admin/Cheresources owner

  • Somehow I do have somewhat different feeling that this reputation thing serves for us as a virtual"mirror" to see our image through our forum colleagues' eyes. And I really like it from this standpoint; \
  • Color shades Green(+ve) and Red (-ve) shall also continue
  • I assume and understand that each one of us is basically forum colleague only ( be a member, newbie etc. what ever definition He or She may gets assigned is simply an active participation benchmark and not reflecting anything extra ordinarily bad or good; as Similar Custom is also followed in few other forums.
Now I am not suggesting/advocating any new rating scale or attributes but remain strongly in favor of 'peer-rating' and 'participation extent measure'

Hope this expresses another viewpoint amongst those indicated above.
In the reputation system, i would remove the marks but let the qualitative status (excellent, very good, good, neutral, ...) only. People interested to know the "numbers" and go to the member's profile. I also like Eng-tips system with the stars...
