Does anybody have a knock out drum inlet detail and micron size limitation? I have a two phase stream of nitrogen, ethanol, methanol and water going to atmosphere where almost all the condensed EtOH, MeOH, and water should be knocked out for environmental permitting reasons. I was planning on using a gravity KO pot with demister pad.

Inlet flow ~420 scfm, 91 F, 15 psia

Liquid phase: 6.5 kg/hr MeOH, 104 kg/hr EtOH, 9 kg/hr water

vapor phase: 4.1 kg/hr MeOH, 36 kg/hr EtOH, 2 kg/hr water

Thank you.

Hi,

1)Consider the literature posted in another post about separator a few days ago  :

Separator Parts Internals Design

To add to it let you consider also the document attached about KO drum internal .

2)Is this the right technology to get rid of organics ?

Wet Scrubber, Adsorption Tower with activated carbon or Thermal oxidizer more suitable !

https://heilprocesse...n/voc-scrubbers

3)Did you check with the authorities ?

Breizh,

Thank you for your response. The client actually has a relatively large allowable VOC permit and since the only VOC's in this process are as stated, we do not have to get to extremely low VOC concentrations. Thanks for the thought regarding scrubbers, etc. though. They mainly do not want to exceed the permit and have elected to use a HX to condense the stream.

Namely do you have an inlet detail? Based on the one article from the other post. A half pipe seems easiest/more economical, but no details were shown.

Hi,

I have attached a scan of a document ( french literature)  where you can find some information about the inlet pipe (tubulure entree separateur vertical) :

orientation :45 degrees

location of the wear plate to mitigate erosion effect (liquid droplets)

maximum height of the liquid

You can review this guide also:

No more to offer , let you try GPSA handbook , Perry's handbook....

Good luck

Hi ,

For safety concern don't release organics (flammable) to atmosphere ,Check for LEL . Make sure you have all preventions means to prevent fire , explosion .... For example pay attention to lightning .
