Hello experts,

In one of our cooling water system there are many exchanger and more-or-less everywhere the Cooling water is adequately supplied.

But in one exchanger, there is high flow going and because of this there is very less flow in the one of the other exchanger.

Moreover, there are butterfly valves for the isolation of exchangers and if we throttle it to restrict flow there is vibration observed.

Hence, we are thinking of inserting orifice plate to restrict flow in the exchanger.

I have few question pertaining to this.

1) Are there any installation criteria for restricted orifice because as such there is not sufficient straight length available at upstream or downstream of exchanger
2) How do i get into sizing of this orifice and on what basis should it be sized.

Regards,

Did you throttle both inlet and outlet valves simultaneously? Crane has the method for restriction orifice sizing. Or, search this site or Google and you will find what you need.

Hi ,

Consider this resource ,

R.W. Miller formula for orifice plate thickness calculation

tmin ≥ SQRT [(0.681-0.651*BETA)*deltaP/Y] * pipe ID

where

tmin = min plate thickness [mm]
BETA = ratio of orifice hole diameter to pipe diameter
deltaP = pressure drop [MPa]
Y = plate material yield stress [MPa]
Pipe ID = pipe internal diameter [mm]

There is an app in microsoft store to calculate the thickness of restriction orifice plate.

Hello,

Is outlet cooling water under pressure? What is the temperature of hot stream? Did you try to throttle outlet valve (cooling water)?

Hello!

Can anyone please help me with Tung and Mikasinovic article from Chemical Engineering, December 12, 1983, pgs 69-71

and Mink, Chem. Eng Aug 25, 1980, p91?

i have to calculate an restriction orifice but i want to see the background formulas.

Thank you in advance!
Have a nice day!
