For one of our project,We wanted to heat a substance in heat exchanger and wanted to know which utility is efficient ? Is it steam or Hot water.

I went through various blogs which says steam heating is efficient since it contains Latent heat.

My concern is to heat 25000kg/h of  substance with specific heat of 4.18 kJ/kg K from 15 to 75 C, required energy is 1791kW.

which is efficient source of utility ? If i use hot water at 85 C entering heat exchanger, or LP steam at 4 bar.

If i use Hot water, i need to first heat tap water from 25 C to 85 C in Hx using steam as utility.

How to justify energy requirement form steam over hot water.

Hi,

No one will suggest you to heat water with steam and then in turn use the water to heat the other fluid (unless the process fluid is temperature sensitive)

There are various factors that you need to consider while finalising the heating medium

1) Ease of availability

2) Heat supplied (latent heat v/s sensible heat)

3) Flowrate of the utility required

4) Temperatures to be attained (higher temperatures can lead to cracking in process fluid)

5) Design Pressure and temperature

6) Additional equipment required for functioning of the system

Based on the data provided by you would require approx 3 MT/hr of steam and 25.2 m3/hr of water

I would personally go for steam, having said that you have provided insufficient information about your process

Agreed if your process fluid is not sensitive to high temperature of steam (> 140 deg C), proceed with steam exchanger.

Hi ,

you may consider the technology described in the document attached for sensitive product .

Good luck

We can justify use of steam following if the substance is not heat sensitive.

1- Using water will required additional equipment(i.e exchanger and pump) space and control for water heating

2- The water heating will require larger heat transfer area for only sensible heat transfer in case of water.
