Hi all,

How does heater treater works in hysys? In hysys, I gave any temperature it separates the oil and aqueous phase. But in general it can't be achieved. How to handle this issue?

Now the water cut and flow rate has been increased. I just know the existing heat load for the heater treater. so I have to calculate the new heat load and the no. of heater treater to achieve B&SW specification?

Please find the attachment. Existing Heater treater (V-102) - 7.9MMbtu/hr for 1200m3/day . As per simulation, it requires 10.8MMbtu/hr. so existing Heater treater V-102 is inadequate. How do i calculate the rest of heater treater duty for the excess liquid 900m3/day and flow requirement?

Hi,

1-Nothing attached...!

2-Heater or Separator...?

HYSYS cannot model a heater-treater's actual performance.  It can give you the heat duty to achieve the target operating temperature a given flowrate, but a HYSYS separator assumes perfect oil/water separation, except for solubilities.

And actual treater vessel is a physical separation that a thermodynamic modeling tool can't handle.  You need to do separator calculations w/ droplet sizes, settling calcs, etc.  Droplet coalescence is another challenge to understand because usually one doesn't have a PSD on the droplets that are present in the feed.

Look for a paper by Thro and Arnold (1994) on correlations to size treaters and desalters based on droplet sizes.  The separation is largely governed by oil viscosity - but issues like surfactants, solids (asphaltenes, clay particles) and organic acids contribute to emulsion stability.
