Hello everyone,
I am still working on the analysis of lubricating oil and have been asked to analyse a particular grade of different brands of lubricating oil(like chevron, mobil, etc) and to suggest the best of these brands. My problem is that I don't know what properties to test for in these oils.I have been thinking of pour point, flash point and so on but don't really know how this can distinguish these oils.I would appreciate any suggestion.Thanx.

Hi,
have you tried actually approaching lubricating oil manufacturers? Their information will probably be better than anyone elses, and lots of companies will help students with projects if they're asked.
The lubricating oil manufacturers should be able to provide MSDS data for their products-I'm pretty sure it's a legal requirement in the UK to be able to provide this data, at least with an order. I certainly received MSDS data when I was buying in some lubricating oil when I was on an industrial placement.
The data they provide should contain all the usual flashpoints, LEL/UOL etc, maybe there will be enough difference between different grades for you to tell the difference if you do some analysis.
You may even be able to get MSDS data on the web - I entered 'lubricating oils MSDS' as a google search and got some MSDS sheets for Chevron etc.
A table showing equivalent lubricating oils may be found at http://www.mts-nw.com/oil%20chart.htm.
I suggest you also think about what makes an oil the 'best' oil - are we talking value for money, longevity, purity etc.
Regards,
Dave
