Hello,

 

I have been tasked with rating an existing vessel which has some interesting internals. The vessel is very similar to the one on page 3 in the following article http://www.peerlessm...vsBrochure1.pdf . Ultimately, I need to be able to tell my client what the design capacity of his vessel is.  I have drawings of the vessel but, I have never rated a double barrel vessel before. Any guidance is appreciated.

Bobby is giving you the right advice.  Go to Peerless, if indeed it was fabricated by them.  If not, go to the fabricator.  I presume you mean "process" rating and not mechanical rating of the vessel(s).

 

There is nothing sacred or arcane about the "bottom barrel" in a  double-barrel separator.  All the bottom barrel does is act as a liquid reservoir to control the liquid level and perhaps lend residence time.  The secret as to its operation is in the design of the top barrel where the "filter" element and disengagement devices are.  If you are new to this type of phase separator, then you really don't have any handle on how or why it works the way it does.  That's why Bobby is giving you the right advice.

Thanks Bobby and Art, I agree and am in contact with the manufacturer of this vessel. As it turns out this vessel is even more peculiar than I originally thought. In other words it really doesn't look much like the separator on page 3 of the brochure I posted (other than the fact that it is a horizontal double barrel separator). The inlet to the vessel is located in the middle of the top barrel which is equipped with 2 demisters (one at either end). I am just curious, is this configuration common and, if so under what circumstances would a separator with 2 demisters be used? I assume lots of gas with lots of entrained liquids. Anyway, as I mentioned I am in contact with the manufacturer about this and will ask their help with the process rating.
