Hi there,

I want to ask, what is the optimum temperature (or temperature range) for a saponification process?

I am doing research on reacting caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) with vegetable oil to fully result in a soap (all reactant becomes product), and I am facing a difficulty in deciding the right temperature.

Thank you for your attention, look forward for feedback.

Some oils like coconut oil react with caustic soda even at room temperature. Some oils like neem oil, tallow need higher temperature for a faster reaction. Saponification can be done at ambient temperature and higher temperature also.(cold process and hot process). For higher temperature process, 60 to 70 deg C is suitable. Continuous stirring would be required. Otherwise lumps will form. Caustic soda should be added in increments, not all at a time. Wait adding another increment of caustic soda until the added increment completely reacts.  You can use phenolphthalein indicator for testing a tiny portion of soap for complete reaction.
