Hello All,

I'd like to know if a water-hydrocarbon separator (2 liquid phases, no gas phase)  working at 2 bar and ambient Temperature with maximum operating temperature = 40 C would require any sort of pressure relief device.

My concern is in the case if hydrocarbon flashing takes place.

Thanks.

Every pressure vessel should be protected against excessive overpressure. There are many codes and standards concerned with the design and application of pressure relief devices. A competent, fully trained person should be assigned to apply the rules of your governing standard.

If the vessel is ASME stamp-ed, you can check UG-140 of ASME section VIII.

Mohamed Hussein,

If the separator is working at 2 barg its design pressure would certainly be higher. Then, if the design code is ASME Sec VIII Div.1 it needs PSV anyway other than if UG-140 conditions being provided in the separator.
