Hi,

I need to calculate Shell and tube heat exchanger, process inlet flow quanitity, I have following details only

Tube side : Cooling water inlet temperature: 29.4 deg C / outlet temperature 32 deg C design flow rate 238 t/hr but in this case Cooling water outlet valve only 20% open

Shell Side: Process fluid -Heptane Inlet temperature :84 deg C outlet flow temperature 39 Deg C ,

Exchanger Design heat duty : 1.9 MMKcal/hr

Other details: Kindly check Attachment,

Please do the needful

Hi ,

With the info submitted not enough to perform balances . If I was in your shoes I will rent a portable flow meter to get the necessary information .

Hope this helps

You can solve for the flows by using: Flow = Q/ (sp. ht. x delta T).

Senthil,

Ok follow the advices given to you and write the necessary equations to use the solver . Feel free to show us your work if you need assistance .

Note : you should find the specification sheet of the HX to support your work and confirm your calculation .

Have fun

sir,

I take your advice , my problem here is heat duty given here only for 100% load that is design heat duty , How can I use this design Q and interpret to find the flow

Senthil,

If you don't know how to proceed ask your instructor .

You need to write all the equations ( mass and heat balances) for your system in excel format and then use the solver .

If unclear about the solver , google excel solver or use the help to support.

Good luck.

Dear Senthil kumar,

Here you can take use of your hot fluid detail as in a heat exchanges, it is consider the heat losses is zero then the heat removed by hot fluid is the heat gain by the cold fluid. you can calculate the heat released by hot fluid with the given detail, same is  the heat gain by cooling water and with given details you have to calculate the cooling water flow.
