Dear all,

I have this problem.

I have to design a blanketing system in order to prevent air to get into water storage tank.

Tanks operating pressure is 12 mbarg and this is the pressure shall be kept as set pressure for the blanketing.

The system is fed by Nitrogen network able to supply nitrogen requirements for the new storage tanks.

the system shall be composed by:

Hold-up compressor that takes the Nitrogen from the network and feed Hold-up vessels

Hold-up vessels.

My question is: is there any criteria to design this system?

in particular: which is the criteria for the compressor selection?

Regarding compressor selection, the most common is a centrifugal compressor. Do you have the total flowrate of N2 needed in your plant? How about the selected pressure? Or only the storage tank needed N2 in your plant? Give more information so that we can advise. :)

Paul has given you great help in just advising you to be specific.  To generalize and give vague information is to invite wrong and/or erroneous responses.

 

You state you want to design a nitrogen blanketing system for a tank.  As Paul has indicated, we have been advising many people on that very subject for many years on this Forum.   You will find many examples in our SEARCH machine.  However, you should be specific in describing what your design involves.  A detailed engineering sketch or flow diagram is the best way to transfer engineering process design.  We don't know what you call a "holdup compressor" and "holdup vessels".  If you show these on a flow diagram, the concept and idea is quickly recognized.  Different people in different countries call the same thing by different names.  An engineering sketch is a universal communicating tool that is understood by everyone, regardless of the authors native language.

 

If you are simply supplying a low pressure nitrogen blanket to water tanks (which is one of the simplest blanketing applications), then you don't need a compressor.  However, if your nitrogen supply is very, very expensive then perhaps you might want to recover the vented nitrogen.  And if you want to recover the vented nitrogen, then you NEVER want to employ a centrifugal compressor.  You won't find one with the appropriate capacity, the installation will be ultra expensive, and more importantly the system won't work correctly or efficiently because this type of compressor is designed for continuous duty and never on-off service.  A small reciprocating model would do just fine if you want to recompress the vented nitrogen.  But, again, you must be able to justify the investment in recompression equipment.

 

Submit all your basic data, complete with a detailed drawing and our members will surely give you valuable advice.
