Good time of the day!

At the moment, a question puzzling me is why and how glass fibers (GF) degrade in water environment? The degradation of GF occurs, reducing strength of GF. As far as I know, the degradation occurs slower in seawater (containing ions) than in distilled water, which in my opinion indicates that process is related to dissociation of glass material. Do I understand correctly, that E-glass is slowly partly dissociating into ions in water environment, or is it ion-exchange or some other mechanism?

Another question interesting me is degradation of Carbon Fibres (CF) in oil environment. I heard, CF is inert in oil (does not degrade or swell), but I wonder, is it really true and to what extent?

Best Regards,

Andrejs Krauklis
