Let's say we have a reactor operating at 45 bar. There are two feed streams. The first one is a gas stream which is compressed from 1 bar to 45 bar. The second feed stream consists of liquid at 45 bar. It is a combination of fresh feed which is pumped from 1 bar to 45 bar and also a recycle stream from a distillation column which is pumped from 5 bar to 45 bar. Hence the reactor is operated at 45 bar.

1. If the compressor fails, would the mixture in the reactor start to flow into the gas stream and would the gas flow backwards due to the higher pressure?

2. If the pump in the recycle stream fails, would the mixture from the reactor as well as the fresh feed start flowing into the recycle stream as well as the distillation column? The feed stream for the distillation column is actually connected to the reactor with a turbine between them. Would the backflow occur right up to the turbine? (the pressure before the turbine is 45 bar and after is 7 bar before the pump failure). What happens after that?

3. If the pumps in both the fresh feed stream and the recycle stream fail, would the gas feed start flowing into the liquid feed? Also would the liquid in the fresh feed and recycle stream flow backwards due to the higher pressure in the gas stream?

I don't really know the answer to these questions so any help would be appreciated.

We don't do HAZOPs this way. You should not either.

There are many requirements to be met before conducting a HAZOP. And an important feature is that persons participating in HAZOP are present in the same room at the same time. And the meeting is lead by a certified professional.
