hye team.

i have 1 question,

i have 2 pipe lines, jetty to port storage (2km), port storage to processing plant (12km). both service are same which is pure methanol. port storage to processing plant (12 km) has pigging facility but jetty to port storage (2 km) don't have.

May i know what criteria need to be considered for pigging facility installation? is it the length of piping? or fluid service? fluid service is clean which is pure methanol and the line never empty from the day first which is for me no need to have pigging facility.

thanks

Hi Farid ,

To me Pigging is used when stagnant liquid may create trouble for the operation ( deposit , crystallization ,etc ) .

You may also consider the safety issue with your product kept in the pipe , Hazop study should clear your doubt.

Hope this helps.

Thanks briezh for the answer.

thus in-case for clean service such as pure methanol liquid should be no problem if don't have pigging facility i guess...I also have been mentioned that the pipe line haven't down since day 1 (year 2000)

Farid,

Following are the criteria for providing pigging operations for pipelines:

1. Buried pipeline

2. Pipeline (buried or above ground) running through remote terrain.

3. Fluid cleanliness (for cleaning pigs) which may require dechoking of pipelines at fixed intervals due to formation of solid layer in the pipeline.

4. Corrosivity of fluid being transported through pipeline which can affect pipeline integrity over a period of time. This includes hydrocarbons or organic fluids containing trace amounts of water that can cause corrosion due to stagnant water layer formation when pipeline is not in operation.

5. Multi-product pipelines which require flushing before switching one product to another

6. Long pipelines in general since visual inspection or maintenance activities related to long pipelines is much more difficult compared to short pipelines. However, this cannot be considered as the only criteria.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Ankur.
