Hi ,Im trying to translate an article and these two phrases are so vague I cant find a proper meaning for them.I know the meaning of the exact words but in these sentences I cant find any reasonable meaning.

Nickel–molybdenum–tungsten sulphide unsupported catalysts were prepared by ex situ decomposition of trimetallic (Ni–Mo–W) precursors.

In situ: means normally "in the place where will be used". That is, a regeneration "in situ" means that is carried out in the same reactor vessel where it is used,  without removing it.

 

ex situ: means "in another place".
