Returning both lean and semi-lean streams to the absorber is a method to save steam. The minimum diameter of a distillation column is set during the design based on internal hydraulics. Sometimes there is an economic benefit to having two diameters in one column to reduce the amount of metal used in fabrication.

using 2 different diameter is to maintain the pressure. as the co2 get absorb to the solvent it will reduce the pressure of the gas. reduce the volume of the column will maintain the pressure.
