Dear all,
I was wondering why some turbines driving compressors need a gearbox to reduce turbine speed, while other turbines do not use gearboxes. Could anyone explain this?
Thank you so much.

It depends on the particular application/size/capacity etc. One of the reasons is that the turbines and compressors are typically manufactured in discrete sizes.
