hye guys

what is capacity certification in relief valve? what is the different between capacity certification required and not?

i did searched in the thread but no result. i have go through some reading but i still cannot get the meaning. it is something relate to ASME standard which Relief valves, since 1985, are required by the ASME to have capacity certification and achieve full lift at no more than 10% overpressure.

can any expert elaborate on their word?

Hi Farid,

It's the certification issued through the tests and withnes by ASME for all PSVs are intended to be installed on ASME pressure vessels. Under this certification a PSV will relieve the required capacity at full lift and allowable overpressure.

thanks fallah for the reply.

how to know when to use with certification required and when to not use certification required?

i notice this in the typical process relief valve datasheet as per attached picture.

Hi Farid,

The design code of the vessel on which the PSV is to be installed dictates the requirement of capacity certification for PSV.

For the case you attached the relevant data sheet, please refer to the relevant vessel data sheet. That vessel probably hasn't been covered by ASME codes because for which no need to capacity certification of PSV (as mentioned in PSV data sheet).

Thanks fallah for the reply. Say for the pd pump block discharge case, we simply no need cerrification isn't?

Hi Farid,

In general yes, but if the design code of pump piping is ASME B31.3 it might require...
