Hello, I would like to know how feed pressure affects the operation of a distillation column. I have read articles which state that if the feed pressure is higher than the column operating pressure, it can be fed directly to the column as the control system will handle the column pressure. However, if the feed pressure is lower than the operating pressure, it needs to be pumped or compressed first. What if I have a feed pressure of 40 bar? Can it be fed directly to a column operating at atmospheric pressure, or should the pressure be relieved first?

Imagine you have two identical drinking water fountains and you are very thirsty.  Each has a pressure gauge before the valve.  One reads 15 cm H2O column and the other reads 40 barg.  Which one can cure your thirst without blasting a hole through your head?

Of course, the pressure has to be dissipated through energy conversion (Bernoulli) or friction.  40 barg is a lot of pressure to dissipate at once.

Hi,

It's obvious that at first the excess pressure should be relieved then conduct the feed to the column...

Nothing wrong with that for a student project.
