Hi,

 

I have a question regarding ERI turbocharger device. This device is manufactured by Energy Recovery Company for desalination plant. One of my colleague was explaining me its working principle in creating pressure from nothing. BUT I could not understand it. I am hoping that someone can explain me here. This device does not have any motor or any external source of energy.

 

The brackish water (high pressure stream) is taken from sea water reverse osmosis unit and it pressure or energy is being exchanged with income water stream. The question is that if the brackish water  (137 m3/hr) with 67 bar pressure is exchanged with incoming water stream of 227 m3/hr with 38.0 bar. How is it possible that incoming water stream pressure is increased to 70 bar by brackish water (137 m3/hr) with 67 bar? I will be very grateful if some one can explain me that where is that additional pressure (3 bar) is coming from.

Think of this as two different devices connected by a mechanical shaft. One device (the pump) increases the incoming water pressure from 38 bar to 70 bar. This pump performs work and requires energy input. The energy might be supplied by an electric motor or a steam turbine. In this case, the energy is supplied by the brackish water stream flowing through a hydraulic turbine as its pressure is reduced from 67 bar. The two devices are not connected by anything but a mechanical shaft. The pump device does not see anything from the hydraulic turbine except the work transferred.

Thank you very much Pilesar for the explanation but i still got some doubt because this device is not connected to the mechanical shaft but to water filled pipe. please see attached PDF file for clear picture.

The mechanical connection is inside the 'turbocharger' device. There is no mixing of the process water between the two sides. Functionally, this is a pump and a driver. The driver is powered by the pressure drop of the brackish water through the hydraulic turbine. The 'turbocharger' puts the pump, driver, and mechanical shaft into one package.
