My manager asked me to reduce the steam out process for one of our reactor from 24 hours to 12 hours to reduce the time of shutdown.  He gave some solution like using some chemicals as oxidizing agents for faster rate of oxidation of any pyrophoric materials inside the reactor.

I have no idea about such chemicals and how can it be used? Are there any other means to accelerate the steam out process?

I appreciate your support.

What type of pyrophorics are you working with?

I've worked with diborane, other borane compounds, and sodium and potassium -- typically we could oxidize these ones by adding methanol or n-propanol to our reactor and refluxing, some times we would need to add a non-reactive solvent first to provide a heat sink, and to allow for proper agitation of the reactor contents before metering in our oxidizing agent.

Also, have you done a root cause analysis of what is truly limiting your steam out rate?

Is steam slow to react with these materials, or are you just not getting good contact / distribution with the steam?
