Hi!

I am working on industrial scale bio-ethanol plant design project which utilized seaweeds as a raw material. My question is I want to separate moisture from solids residue after fermentation. Once moisture is removed then it can be sold in market as cattle feed. And objective is that 10% moisture should remained in solids, so that one can store it for long duration. Below is stream condition and my strategy,

Component flow of stream after fermentation.

FH2O          (Kg/mint)       = 4533

FEthanol   (Kg/mint)       = 283

Fsolid         (Kg/mint)       = 622

Total Flow = 5155

Composition

XH2O         (Kg/mint)  = 83 %

Xethanol   (Kg/mint)  = 5 %

Xsolid         (Kg/mint)  = 12 %

Temperature = 25 C and Pressure = 1 atm

So, I first did centrifuge and assume that It removes 40 % moisture. Then, I incorporated steam bundle dryer and achieved the desired target i.e. 10 % moisture in final solids. But when I calculated duty of dryer by using aspen plus, it came 3400000 Gj/ yr ( I considered 8500 operating hours/ year). More over the evaporated stream contain mixture of ethanol and water, so in order to recover ethanol I first condense it and then separated ethanol by using distillation columns and molecular sieve. Diagram of said process is attached in attachment,

As one can see that dryer is consuming alot energy, is there any alternate mean to reduce this energy? You can find the

Hi ,

You may find pointers reading this document .

Perry's chemical engineers' handbook should be another resource.

Good luck

Hi Breizh,

I am extremely sorry for missing file. Now file is attached. Anyway, thank you so much for sharing PDF, it was really helpful especially due to number of case studies.

I will be glad if you will also provide thoughts on pervaporation system for ethanol system. Diagram along with excel file is attached. I need feedback whether my calculation and diagram  is right. Please also note that this my first time I am modelling Pervaporationn system, error make occur in calculations, so your kind tips and suggestion will help me alot.

Warm Regards,

Rofice
