Hello,

If the contents of a reactor are being distilled under vacuum through a condenser, and a receiving vessel is collecting the distillate, why is a balance line connected from the receiver to the vacuum line on the reactor?

Could I ask someone to explain what the balance line is doing, what the seal leg/s do? A well explained sketch would really be appreciated.

Thanks

You must supply the sketch.

Hi ,

Let you tell us what is going to happen if there is no seal leg , will you pull your column under vacuum?

Same for balance line,   if not will you be able to feed your receiver ?

Ok so I have attached a diagram. The questions I have are as follows

1. What is the purpose of the balance line?

2. What is the purpose of the liquid seal?

3. Is the balance line in the correct place in the diagram?

4. Should the receiver have its own vacuum supply also (as well as the balance line)?

5. What would happen if there was no balance line but the receiver did have a vacuum supply of its own?

6. Would it be ok to run the distillation by pulling vacuum on the distillate receiver only?

DB2017:

If you can't understand the simple and revealing responses offered by both Bobby Strain and Breizh, then you must either be a non-engineer or a beginning engineering student and you should be posting this type of query in the Student Forum.

That is why I am moving this post to the Student Forum.
