Hello,

Could you please share typical HETP values of packing for amine contactor?

I have found some information about efficiency of trays but not for packing. I've monoethanolamine solution and sour gas with mainly of H2S content. The target is removal of H2S.

Kind regards,

Nikolay

HETP in absorbers depends on many factors, such as packing type, liquid viscosity, absorption factor, et cetera,

Different packings give different interfacial areas (m2/m3) and liquid viscosity depends on temperature, amine type and amine concentration.

20 - 30 years ago, when I was often involved in the design of HDS and HCU which usually included an amine absorber, I remember that we used HETP = 3 m (three meters) for DEA or MDEA over 2 inch random packing (2" Pall rings or IMTP50).

This is just to give you a rough idea. For different amine and different packing type & area one would need to adjust that HETP.

You best contact the vendor of your particular packing for a more exact HETP number based on present knowhow.

The term HETP is mostly or mainly used in case of distillation application whereas in case of absorption application it is mass transfer coefficient kga values.

You can ask the vendors like Sulzer, Koch-Glitsch to furnish the mass transfer coefficient data for various packing types, HETP in absorption is a misleading concept in my views.

If you are using primary amine like MEA, absorption is by chemical reaction and extremely fast unlike tertiary amine like MDEA or any other physical solvent hence packing type should not make much difference if MEA is used as a solvent since it is more of chemisorption than physical absorption.

Thank you,

I agree with you about using HETP in Amine unit design. Unfortunately, to get Kga value from vendor impossible, because it's know-how.

Nikolay
