Are hydrogen fueled furnaces used industrially?

What additional safety features would a hydrogen furnace have as opposed to a furnace running on methane/ethane gas?

 

Is the furnace flooded with an inert gas and air only supplied at the point of entry and ignition of the hydrogen?

Hydrogen is burned in furnaces... usually as an 'alternate fuel' in a mixture with methane. Perhaps 70/30 or 80/20 mix would be burned if no more valuable use could be made of the hydrogen and it was in excess. With alternate fuels, startup might be on natural gas and then hydrogen mixture substituted or blended. Typical burner management safety is required with isolating fuel source, lightoff purge requirements, etc. Hydrogen might not use the same burner as the natural gas since the burner orifice and metering system would be different. Typically you do not flood furnaces with inert gas, but with air before lightoff.
