I am recently working in a new distribution hub project which handles gasoline and kerosene. Gasoline and kerosene are transferred to another city near to sea for shipping purpose via centrifugal pump of capacity 700 m3/hr. There is a kerosene filtration skid with pre-filters and water coalescers for water removal. There is no flare system in the distribution hub as it is meant to store products at atmospheric pressure. However, kerosene filtration system is a pressurized system. Safety valves (for fire case) with set pressure of 8 bar are provided on pre-filters and water coalescers.
This is for the first time I am working with flammable liquids and hence I have following queries on this system.
- Pump vendor will provide vent and drain connections for pump casing. We have connected pump drain to a closed drain header which is routed to oily water lift station (flow by gravity). However, I don’t think that pump vent shall be routed to the closed drain header. Because at time of start-up, air in suction line will be pushed to closed drain header through vent connection which is not desirable. Keeping vent open will result in leakage of flammable liquid to open atmosphere which is not safe. Please suggest how to deal with pump venting system. In normal practice, how do we deal for venting of pumps with flammable liquids?
- Kerosene filtration skid vendor has provided safety valves on pre-filters and water coalescers for fire case. We don’t have a flare system at this distribution hub. Please suggest what are the possible destinations for safety valve discharge.
