We desire to make a model of heat exchanger for the purpose of demonstration. The hot and cold side fluid is water at 70 degrees Celsius and tap water (~30 degrees Celsius) respectively. The type of heat exchanger, material of construction and flow regime are for us to determine. However there are constraints related to dimensions of the model. The model has to be 30*30*50 cm in size. The maximum residence time allowed is 5 minutes. No chemicals are allowed. Only water on both hot and cold sides are to be used. Kindly advise on type of HEX, MOC and configuration. What materials encountered in daily usage can be employed to make the model ?

What is the quality of the water being used?

The quality of water being used is not known. It has been informed that cold water is tap water and the source of hot water is unknown to us. However, kindly enlist the parameters required for the analysis of water quality and explain the dependence of heat transfer on the quality of water used ?

The heat transfer for the model heat exchanger will depend on the fouling factors used. In a TEMA manual there is nearly a whole page of fouling values to be used in heat transfer calculations. For example, a value of 0.0005 is to be used for condensate..
